Semiya or Vermicelli Upma is pretty much a very versatile breakfast dish. Generally vermicelli upma is made with wheat vermicelli, and the recipe can be kept simple and quick by just adding some chopped onion, peanuts etc or making it elaborate by adding in a variety of veggies to make this upma more flavorful and healthy.

The semiya upma that I have made here is by using Ragi or Finger Millet Semiya which also makes this a Gluten free dish. You can add, skip, replace any of the veggies that I’ve added here to make this dish your own. You can also use semiyas made out of various other millets like foxtail millet, finger millet, little millet, etc.

Ingredients:

Direction:

  • To make this Ragi Vermicelli Upma, finely chop onion, french beans, carrot and capsicum. Keep it aside.

  • Now heat 2 tablespoon oil in a pan. Once it is hot, add mustard & cumin seeds, asafoetida and curry leaves.
tempering
  • When it starts to splutter, add groundnuts and cashew nuts. Fry them for a min till it turns golden brown.

  • To it, add all other chopped vegetables and green peas. Add a bit of salt and let the vegetables cook for 3-4 mins. Add some water if required and cover the pan to cook.
mix veggies fry
  • Once the vegetables turn soft, add ragi vermicelli and roast it for 2-3 mins.

  • Then add hot water to the vermicelli. Generally ragi semiya requires less water than your regular wheat ones so add less water first and you can always increase it later, if required. Excess water will make the upma soggy. Add salt and mix everything well.
