Paneer Pakoda (Cottage Cheese Fritters) calls for a perfect evening snack recipe, especially during rainy days around. Pakodas are bite sized fritters, typically made from onion, paneer or any other vegetables that are dunked in a spicy gram flour batter and deep fried till they turn golden and crisp. For someone who is a foodie but also health conscious at the same time, here is my version of non-fried paneer pakodas that are high in protein and low in fat too.

In this recipe, I have sprinkled some spice powders over paneer cubes as paneer doesn’t have its own taste. Then I have dipped them in gram flour batter and fried them on a pan with just a teaspoon of oil. With this method, the pakodas turn out to be extremely healthy without any major change in the taste compared to the deep-fried version. These Paneer Pakodas can be paired with a simple ketchup or coriander-mint chutney.

  • Cut paneer into thin 1 inch square pieces. Sprinkle some red chilli powder and salt. Rub it well onto the cubes and set aside.

  • Take gram flour in a bowl. Add red chilli powder, turmeric, coriander powder, ginger paste, carom seeds, dry fenugreek and salt.

  • Add water and mix well to make a thick paste. It should be of a coating consistency.

  • Meanwhile heat a teaspoon of oil in a pan.
  • Dip the paneer cubes into gram flour batter and add it on the pan. Close the lid and let it cook for 4-5 mins on one side.

  • Dip the paneer cubes into gram flour batter and add it on the pan. Close the lid and let it cook for 4-5 mins on one side.

  • Once both the sides are cooked, remove and sprinkle with some chaat masala.
  • Serve these non-fried paneer pakodas while they are hot with ketchup or green mint-coriander chutney.
