Sattu, basically a flour made up of roasted Bengal gram or roasted Chana, is one of the most underrated superfood but is slowly gaining popularity in various states of India and abroad too. Sattu is traditional to Bihar and its neighboring states and is widely used there for years now. It can be made at home from scratch by roasting the gram, or directly grinding store bought roasted gram. Ready made Sattu Flour is also available in markets. Sattu ka Paratha, Litti Chokha are some famous dishes that make use of the Sattu flour. Another such traditionally made recipe or drink is the Sattu Sharbat.

Sattu is often consumed more in summers due to the cooling effect that is has on our body and helps prevent sunstroke. Apart from this, Sattu is rich in iron, manganese, magnesium and low on sodium. It is also high in protein and makes for a great post workout drink too.

The Sattu Sharbat recipe here is a savoury sharbat that’s quick to make if you have all ingredients handy. A sweet version of the Sharbat is also made, for which you can simply mix in some sugar (or jaggery/honey), salt and lemon juice in plain sattu water.

You can also check out my recipe of Sattu ka Paratha here, which makes for a healthy and filling breakfast meal.
